Higashino Keigo’s The Camphorwood Custodian Anime Movie Adaptation Announced for 2026
Animation studio A-1 Pictures has announced via a new official X (Formerly Twitter) account and official website that an anime movie adaptation of Higashino Keigo’s The Camphorwood Custodian novel, directed by Itou Tomohiko, will premiere in Japan in 2026.
The official site unveiled the first teaser visual.
The Camphorwood Custodian novel was first released on March 17, 2020.
Higashino Keigo’s other works include the 2002 manga series Heads, with art by Mase Motoro, and the 2009 manga series Houkago, with art by Shimotsuki Kayoko.

Naoi Reito, a man in his early 20s, was unjustly fired from his job.
Enraged and fuelled by feelings of revenge, he tries to steal a valuable device from his workplace, but things don't go to plan, and he ends up arrested.
In jail, Reito receives an unexpected visit from a lawyer who offers to arrange for his release if he complies with the lawyer's client's wishes.
Seeing no alternative, Reito accepts and soon discovers that the lawyer's client is his aunt.
When Reito tells her that he has no plans for the future, she gives him an order: 'What I want you to do is guard a camphor tree.' Thus begins Reito's custodianship of a camphor tree standing on the grounds of a shrine—a camphor tree with a mysterious legend associated with it.
